Hi neighbors!
BWNA General Meetings are held on even-numbered months, but August is an
exception. In place of the usual meeting on the second Monday of the month,
we'll be celebrating summer (and neighborhood crime prevention) at the
annual Wilshire Park (National Night Out) BWNA Potluck Picnic on the first
Tuesday,
August 4th, beginning at 6:30 p.m. and ending around 8:30. BWNA will
provide hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, buns, condiments, and bottled
water. Neighbors are encouraged to bring chips, salads, entrees, and desserts.
Additionally, musical entertainment, games for kids, and a door prize
raffle will be featured, with police officers, firefighters, and local
politicians on hand to greet the audience. (Last year we had close to 200 people
attending.)
Please let me know if you are willing help out on the picnic. I promise it
will not involve any heavy lifting or lengthy time commitment on your part.
We're also in need of a small grill suitable for cooking veggie burgers
and are searching the neighborhood for someone who is willing to donate it
for the evening of the picnic. Are you able to provide such a grill? If not,
do you know someone who can? (The alternative a donated grill is renting
one for $60.)
Other summer events coming up:
* Sunday, June 28th, 2:00 p.m. = Portland Wind Band Ensemble Concert &
Potluck Picnic in Wilshire Park
BWNA last heard from band director Cynthia Plank and her Beaumont Middle
School Jazz Ensemble musicians at the Taste of Beaumont. She returns to the
neighborhood on June 28th with a totally different
musical program featuring the Portland Wind Band Ensemble: "We are a
40-piece band, playing very listenable classical as well as familiar popular
music, like from Broadway shows and marches." Bring a potluck picnic dish and
enjoy this free concert with your neighbors.
* 4th of July Neighborhood Parade, NE 45th and Wistaria, 10:00 a.m.
In its third year, this informal holiday parade of BW neighbors has become
a popular Independence Day morning event. It's the brainchild of BW
resident Mimi Farley. For details, phone her at 503-282-9216.
* Sunday Parkways, Northeast Portland, July 19th, from 9:00 a.m.-4 p.m.
Building on last summer's successful Sunday Parkways event, the city is
sponsoring three this summer--one through the middle of our neighborhood. A
route for cyclists and walkers will connect Alberta, Fernhill, and Wilshire
Parks in a seven-mile traffic-free loop. They can use volunteers. Contact
Rich Cassidy of Transportation Options to help. His number is 503-823-6051.
* Fremont Fest, August 1st, shopping & festivities all day and into the
evening on Fremont St.
For details, contact Beaumont Business Association
Interim President Jackie Safco at 503-445-8723.
Lastly, at the last BWNA General Meeting, a resolution was passed to oppose
the renaming of 39th Ave., and I was directed to communicate the
Association's decision to the Mayor and City Commissioners. I'll copy my e-mail
letter to all of you. One of the points I'll be emphasizing is that opposition
to the renaming of 39th is in no way intended to diminish the historic
contributions of Cesar Chavez.
Best,
Al Ellis--BWNA Pres.
